Wisconsin Police Crack Down on Street Takeovers

Posted on November 26, 2024 in Criminal Defense

WI defense lawyerStreet takeovers are a dangerous new nationwide trend where a group of drivers and onlookers gather to perform dangerous stunts or engage in street racing. These gatherings take place on public streets or spaces and can put everyone in the area at risk. While most of these events take place in the warmer months, winter street racing events are especially deadly due to the increased risk of a driver losing control in the ice and snow. Madison, WI police recently cited about 80 drivers in a massive street takeover that took place at the East Town Mall. Other police departments have taken notice and are starting to crack down on these illegal events and the many traffic offenses they involve. If you have been charged with a traffic crime related to a street takeover event, you need a well-qualified Milwaukee County, WI traffic offenses attorney to help you. The penalties can be serious and range from a $20 fine to years in prison if someone is killed as a result.

Milwaukee, WI Police Promise to Stop Street Takeovers

Last Spring, Milwaukee police stated that they would be making "focused efforts to ensure individuals know there will be accountability" for participating in street takeovers. There are some fears among law enforcement that these events could lead to violence in addition to deaths and injuries caused by car crashes.

These events are often announced via social media, making it easier for police to know when and where street takeovers will be happening before the first participants begin arriving. In the past, street races were generally a well-kept secret among participants, but social media has made them much more accessible to the public.

Possible Charges for Participating in Street Takeovers

Some of the charges drivers participating in street takeovers could face include:

  • Street racing - Drivers can be cited for street racing, which is illegal in Wisconsin. Drivers do not need to be participating in an organized event to be cited for street racing. Even casually racing a friend on the interstate counts.
  • Reckless driving - When street takeover participants perform risky stunts, like doing "donuts" or spinning out, people can get hurt. Driving in a way that shows reckless disregard for the safety of people or property is the definition of reckless driving.
  • DUIs - Drugs and alcohol are commonplace at these illegal events. Drivers who partake may be charged with a DUI.
